Feeling a bit hungry but it’s not lunch or dinner time? Maybe feeling snacky after dinner and chillin’? Many treats are loaded with sodium, especially potato chips.
Thankfully, there are more options on the market every day!
Crisps, Chips, Crunch
I’m a sucker for a crispy chip especially tortilla. Most potato chips have about the same amount of salt, roughly 160mg for a serving. But let’s be real, who eats ONE serving of chips?
The good news is, not all chips are equal, and there are several low(er) salt options available. Whether it’s a classic potato chip or even a crunchy Frito, a quick look in the giant snack aisle of your supermarket may reveal new options.

Stick with Classic Flavors
Yes, I love Cool Ranch Doritos, and not because the bag is blue. I also like plain tortilla chips for low sodium salsa and dips.
Check that bag of tortilla chips which may have less salt than its potato cousin or another brand. While not a classic, I found Late July Multigrain Chips at my local Costco and at 95mg of sodium a serving I can get big crunch for small salt.
Also, stick with classic flavors. Seasoned chips, especially flavored kettle cooked potato chips, can have more sodium than its regular self.
Go Nuts
Mixed nuts are a great, filling snack loaded with healthy fats and an alternative protein source for those limiting or avoiding meat. To keep sodium low for that between-meal treat, look for “lightly salted” or unsalted nuts or mixes.
A handful of raw almonds, cashews or walnuts are also great, too. While slightly more expensive, they are more versatile for cooking and baking, when the need arises.
Mix it Up
Snack mix packs are super convenient and can be another hidden source of sodium. You can make your own blend with a few ingredients like lightly salted peanuts, unsalted pretzels, dried fruit and a low sodium cereal. Some chocolate bites can also add a sweet to your savory.
Also unsalted rice cakes can add a crunchy base for natural peanut butter, cream cheese, or even salsa.
