BBQ Pork Rub

Three racks of BBQ pork spare ribs on a Big Green Egg grill with two wrapped baked potatos

As the summer heats up, it’s time to get low with the grill. Low and slow, that is.

I use my grill year round. From steaks to chops, chicken to burgers, I love to cook over an open 🔥. When pork ribs are on sale over the holidays (usually around the Fourth of July), I’ll pick up a few racks and keep them in the freezer for a future smoke out.

My preferred method is the classic 3-2-1 which you can also do in the oven on low temp. However, a great rib starts with a great rub.

To keep things low sodium, especially since my favorite BBQ sauce is pretty salty, I make my own pork rib rub. This recipe is great for ribs, but also pork shoulder or butt for tender flavor-packed pulled pork.

With this base recipe, you can #makeityours by adding heat, using smoked paprika if you don’t have a smoker, pretty much anything. Any extra seasoning stores easily and it’s cheaper per ounce than a store bought shaker.
