Pizza is universal. I’m not sure I’ve met anyone that doesn’t like it. Plus, with so many gluten and dairy free options, it really has become a food for all.
A slice of pie can be sneaky with sodium. Sure, delivery or frozen pizzas are a bit more obvious, but there are several options you can choose to help reduce salt.
Fresh is Best
Homemade will always rule the day. Either with fresh made or store bought pizza dough.
Opt for no salt added tomato sauce, or thin out tomato paste to get a low salt option.
You can also lean into bianca (white) pizza which I prefer. I use olive oil instead of red sauce and Italian herbs with garlic powder to pack a punch. Add red pepper flake directly into the crust, for a little added heat.
Rise to the Toppings
If ordering out or homemade, your choice of toppings is key.
Processed meats often contain more salt; think bacon, pepperoni, ham and sausage (yup, that meat lovers is salty). Opt for grilled chicken or tofu for low salt proteins.
Fresh vegetables will always win! I like peppers, onions, and even fresh jalapeños. And maybe go a little light on the shaker cheese 🧀.
Crust is King
The debate rages on which type of pizza is best and I like them all. Depends on my mood. Generally, thicker crusts will have more dough and therefore more sodium than their thinner cousins per slice.
Consider a thin or tavern style crust instead of deep dish or pan. This will give you crunchy pizza that’s sure to please.
If making at home, check the frozen pie crusts over fresh or canned dough for the least salty option per serving. If it adds convenience, it probably adds salt.

But I want Chicago Deep Dish!
Yup, I get it. And yes, I have my favorite place 😉, so moderation is key. One slice isn’t great of the classic sausage, but paired with a low salt day, it’s easily enjoyable.
Like most things, moderation is key. If I have two slices, I’ll feel as dense as the pizza for the next 24 hours.
