This year Cinco de Mayo falls on Tuesday. I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate than tacos 🌮.
Skip the lines at the taqueria and kits from the store by making your own low salt tacos at home.
Recipes abound from classic and authentic, to Cali-inspired creations. Here are three simple swaps for your Taco Tuesday routine.
Not-cho Taco Seasoning
Most taco meat seasonings or packets are loaded with salt. Making your own low sodium version is easy and with ingredients you likely have in your spice rack.
Because chili powder already has sodium, leave out the added salt in this taco seasoning recipe. Or purchase from our favorite unsalted seasoning brand. You can always add saltiness with hot sauce or salsa.
I love this seasoning with pressure cooked chicken thighs which can then be shredded making great leftovers for taco salad and more for the week.
Corn vs. Flour
The debate rages on, as it should. Most corn tortillas have about 1/10th or less the amount of sodium as their flour-y friends and is a great low salt food.
Opt for corn which gives you the most control. Toasted on a griddle or under the broiler and you’re set. Double up with some melted cheese in between if you’re worried about breakage.
Let’s Salsa Dance
Store bought fresh and jarred salsa are loaded with hidden sodium. Our low salt salsa recipe is simple with a few fresh ingredients and a couple of pantry staples, “no salt added,” of course 😉.
Totally understandable if you don’t own a food processor or blender. Chop the ingredients into a chunky pico de gallo that will top anything from the store.
These simple salt swaps can drastically reduce your sodium allowing for that third (or fourth) taco. We’re not judging.
