Holiday Ham

Roasted bone-in ham finished in an aluminum pan

A holiday ham is such a great choice! My usually eat on New Years Day as part of a traditionally southern meal to start the year. Remember, the ham is super salty to start, so coordinate your sides accordingly. Any left over ham is great for other recipes like split pea soup and will add all the salt you need.

Ingredients:

  • 1 6-8 lb ham, bone-in, spiral cut if you’d like
  • Whole Cloves
  • 1/2 Cup brown sugar
  • Juice of one orange

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325F degrees. Place the ham into a large enough roasting pan.
  2. Using a pairing knife, cut about an inch deep and inch wide along the ham in both directions creating a cross pattern.
  3. At each intersection, insert a whole clove.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and orange juice. Using a basting or silicon brush, baste sugar mixture onto the turkey getting it into all the newly cut cracks.
  5. Cover with aluminum foil and place in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
  6. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and let roast for another 10-15 minutes to allow the sugars to caramelize. Remember the ham is likely already cooked, so you’re looking to heat through and add some moisture and flavor.
  7. Once heated through and the sugars are browned, remove and let rest for about 10 minutes.
  8. Carve and serve with your favorite sides.

Salt Swaps:

  • Ham is salty. There’s no two ways about it. Consider looking for the lowest sodium per serving brand you can find.

Notes:

  • I like to find the smallest ham I can. Cheaper options can include hams that are bone-in and often not cut. I actually prefer this as it’s less processed and allows me to cut into chunks and freeze leftover ham for other delicious dishes later.
