Wing It!

Seasoned chicken wings smoking on a a grill grate

It’s unofficially summer and this year is the longest yet. With Memorial Day as early in May and Labor Day as late in September as the calendar allows, you’ll get extra time to try out new recipes that save on salt all summer long.

One of my favorite year round dishes, but is great at a summer BBQ, is smoked chicken wings. Traditionally, wings are fried and finished tossed in a butter base hot sauce with countless flavor options. But smoked wings are so much more!

This summer, ditch the fryer and light up the grill to give your wings added fun and flavor. My favorite recipe starts with a spicy homemade rub that’s best when marinated overnight.

Then smoke on a grill (or bake on low heat if grilling isn’t an option) until the internal temperature reaches 165F degrees. Toss in my own wing sauce recipe that leverages no sodium hot sauce and unsalted butter. Hey, we’re not counting calories!

Looking for a not-so-spicy sauce? Lemon pepper is a great no salt option that’s a flavor booster for all. Or you can create a honey garlic sauce that’s sure to please.
